G3 – Shoes for Two

Since this is the season of giving, I love the idea of purchasing products that benefit more than just the intended receiver (her, him, the little ones and our furry friends). This week’s green giving ideas also come in the form of retail choices that give back to someone besides just your friends or family. I’ve been a fan of  Tom’s Shoes for quite a while and every time I go into my favorite grocery (Whole Foods Market), there are a ton of new Tom’s for sale. I’m a particular fan of the silver ones featured here but you really can find a perfect shoe for her, him or the little ones while also knowing you’re helping Tom’s One for One movement outfit a needy child with a pair of shoes as well. That’s the best type of giving there is, in my opinion.

More on Tom’s One for One Movement:

Why Shoes?

Many children in developing countries grow up barefoot. Whether at play, doing chores or going to school, these children are at risk:

•A leading cause of disease in developing countries is soil-transmitted diseases, which can penetrate the skin through bare feet. Wearing shoes can help prevent these diseases, and the long-term physical and cognitive harm they cause.

•Wearing shoes also prevents feet from getting cuts and sores. Not only are these injuries painful, they also are dangerous when wounds become infected.

•Many times children can’t attend school barefoot because shoes are a required part of their uniform. If they don’t have shoes, they don’t go to school. If they don’t receive an education, they don’t have the opportunity to realize their potential.
