A fresh start to your V-Day

With the big V falling on a Monday this year, I suggest you show the love, bright and early, with a fresh & local start to your day. A trip to your local bakery, farmer’s market or Whole Foods to grab a few fresh out of the oven pastries or baguettes along with a basket of fresh strawberries & a little jam will show the one you love that the best of waking up is…the person you wake up to.

Here are a few of my faves in the bakery & jam department.

Los Angeles:
AKASHA’S small batch jams, chutneys, and preserves, made in the restaurant from the very best locally sourced fruits and vegetables, are available online or in her bakery. .

Clementine – Homemade seasonal food

Sweet Lady Jane – known for its use of pure ingredients like fresh fruits, natural butter and imported chocolate – they have amazing artisan breads, spiced fruit bars and, of course, unbelievable custom cakes

New York:
Birdbath Bakery Simply put – this place is astounding. Birdbath Bakery (a “little” sister bakery of The City Bakery) serves food that’s made from organic materials, is regionally grown, and seasonal. The bakeries are built from recycled, found, vintage, or sustainable materials – click here to view the actual make up of one of their bakeries. Birdbath is wind-powered, and all of the food is delivered from our main kitchen in bicycle-powered rickshaws. They also give discounts to any customer who arrives by bike, or even skateboard.

Savriole from organic and gluten-free ingredients to biodegradable packaging, this organic bakery strives to create luscious baked goods with a minimum effect on the environment. You can order online for shipping or pick up from their kitchen in the City.

One Lucky Duck – founder Sarma is all about raw, vegan & organic. Stop by their new shop in Chelsea Market (also another location in Gramercy Park) or shop online for their chocolate truffle butter, buckwheat & hemp granola and awesome finds to eat, wear and give. Your significant other will be One Lucky Duck with a gift from her shop.

Atlanta:
Braswell’s Preserves – I love the variety of organic preserves they produce but truly heart the vintage (& resuable) glassware they come in. Totally a collectable item and an amazing gift! Buy online or find at the Dekalb Farmer’s Market.

Bakeshop – pecan apricot white chocolate scones, almond croissants, butter croissants, chocolate croissants, cheese, apple, and blueberry danishes, chocolate almond croissants, apple turnovers, chocolate cheesecake muffins, blueberry muffins, apple cider muffins, and ham and cheese croissants…and Jonathan St. Hilaire at the helm. Need I say  more…

Star Provisions – for an all-around amazing array of bakery items, bakeware items, cheese & meats, gifts & more…this is one of my faves in Atlanta. Anne, Frances & the whole team make me jealous I’m not a buyer for them…what a job that would be!
